NOELANI JONES
MAY 23-26 // HOME STUDIO // greensboro, nc
Born and raised on the island of Oahu, Noelani Jones (she/they) is the “Weaver Beaver,” a play on words addressing the history of weaving, in the Western world, being considered “woman’s work.” There is merit to following in the footsteps of those who came before us and keeping the craft alive and remembered. Jones is a community-building fiber artist passionate about strengthening communities and individuals with art and an appreciation for the natural world. Jones has her BFA in Craft with a concentration in Fibers from Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Richmond, VA. Her work primarily consists of handweaving and natural dyeing.
In 2019, Jones spent the spring at Penland School of Craft in Bakersville, NC. In the summer she was awarded loomer-in-residence at the Lazuli Residency in Vermont and recently exhibited, PENELOPE at the Rump Gallery in Richmond, Virginia. Currently, Jones lives in Greensboro, NC, working as the Artisan Weaver with Dawn Sweitzer Studio to produce their one-of-a-kind, luxury textiles since 2018. Jones is represented by ARTMONGERZ, a co op art gallery in downtown Greensboro, NC.

2020, Woody’s Eggs
Hemp, straw, naturally dyed wool, Woodys egg shell, and time. 4X6 inches.
“Today we ran out of eggs so we went to get more. The pandemic has exposed the disaster of industrial agriculture. I’ve been getting through it by knowing my local food supply chain! Woody talked with us for a long time about the importance of quality produce and how he considers his farming to be a healing practice.”
2020, Flower Weaving
Dried wildflower, beads and stones on cotton thread, and time.
“Spring time in North Carolina will have my heart forever. Thinking a lot about place-based art, time as a place, and weaving as a time record.”
2020, Paper weaving
Paper and time. 7.5X10 inches.
Excited by the endless possibilities I can see weaving with paper! Thinking about using what comes from the sky and using what comes from the land in different ways, and turning digital images analog though weaving.
2020, Pau
Linen, mystery yarn (burlap?) and time. 4X3 inches.
Thinking about my residency experiencing being finished, done, text as the first textile, creating textiles that are object-like.

List of “desires” and thoughts initially. I added to it on the left side as my residency time progressed.
